There's a particular quality to the light on the Garden Route in the cooler months — low, golden, and long. At Plettenberg Bay Country Club, the course plays differently from June through August, and for visiting golfers making their way along this stretch of coastline, a little local knowledge goes a long way. Here's what you need to know before you tee off.
The course in winter
Plettenberg Bay sits in one of the mildest climates on the South African coast. While the highveld can be bitterly cold and the Cape Winelands are drenched in winter rain, Plett tends to hold its own — cool mornings that warm up nicely by mid-morning, with afternoon breezes coming off the bay. Rounds are comfortable in a light mid-layer; a waterproof shell in the bag is sensible, but you're unlikely to need more than that.
What changes most noticeably in winter is the pace of the course. Summer heat and coastal humidity keep growth aggressive, which means faster rough and a lusher fairway surface. Come June, the fairways firm up, the rough eases back, and the ball runs noticeably further off the tee. For players who grew up on the course, it's a different game — and usually a welcome one.

Tips for your round
Book early in the week if you're flexible — midweek rounds are quieter, and the course is often in its best condition after weekends when it gets a chance to recover. Tee times from 9am onwards let the morning dew lift and the greens firm up nicely. Early starters will find the course empty but the surfaces a touch slower underfoot.
Wind is the key variable in the afternoons, when the south-easterly tends to build off the bay. Club selection rewards patience — one less club and a shallower approach flight often outperforms trying to muscle through a headwind. Local knowledge is your best asset; if you're unsure, ask at the pro shop before heading out.
Course conditions
The greens hold up well through winter — true and quick enough to reward a confident stroke, without getting away from visiting players. Trust your first read and commit to the line, especially on the shorter putts.
